“by the ears”不能解释为“在耳边”

【例句】The two fought each other by the ears.【误解】两个人在耳边互相打了起来。

【正确】两个人赤膊相斗。

【说明】by the ears有两个意思，一是“扭打”、“打斗”，一是“争吵”、“不和”。

由它构成的习语还有：fall together by the ears(扭打起来)等。

这里要注意另外两个由ear构成的习语：hold / take / have by the ears(紧紧控制住，左右);lead sb by the ears(任意支配，指使)。
