Social networking introduces risks that extend beyond the online world. When creating a profile or posting updates, we are often tempted to act as if we’re only speaking to our close friends. With social networking, however, much of your information is rapidly available to virtually anyone. Boldly proclaiming hard-line stance on controversial topics can, at the very least, alienate those who may disagree with you and, at the very worst, inspire people to take action against you. You may have a nuanced view of why you want pot legalized, for example, but changing your profile picture to a pot leaf that says “legalize it” may cause others to simply generalize you as a heavy drug user.
