Oooh, the things you have dreamed. The epic "I'm outta here!" speech..with a torch in your hand, standing on a desk in the middle of the room! The dramatic flipping of the bird in the face of the CEO...who is standing there in plaid golf shorts. Or, perhaps you grab beers from a drink cart, open the emergency exit and slide out, screaming "Later, dudes!" (That last one sort of actually happened. A jetBlue flight attendant literally abandoned ship in epic form...although, I don't think he screamed "Later, dudes!") 当面对CEO(首席执行官)竖中指…… 虽然他没有喊“回见了,伙计们!”)These are not awesome ways to leave. Ok. They are "awesome"...but not smart. You are not a movie star shooting a film. You are a person who has a long life of employment in front of you. Your co-workers, your vendors, your clients or partners, even your own friends and family will remember you as dramatic (and might respect you for standing your ground) but they won't remember much else besides that epic departure. Fact: People take jobs because they believe in a place, an opportunity, a company. And, people leave jobs because they don't like the people/management. Assuming you have tried to improve your situation and just can not survive another day...Here are some suggestions for leaving smart. 1. Breathe. Do 10 push ups. Sing "Sweet Home Alabama" really loud to yourself. Or find some other way to calm yo'self. Quitting in the heat of frustration is not an awesome way to go.1. 2. Prepare. Back up your files, addressbook, anything else you will want to have (and may legally take with you). Figure out your healthcare (COBRA?), cash out vacation days, and any other benefits you might be entitled to. Know all of this before you quit. It's a lot harder to access this stuff from the outside.2. 3. Think of 3 things you are grateful you learned/achieved in this job. You can almost always find 3 genuine things. Maybe you learned a new way to do something or tried something for the first time or learned something about yourself. Learnings lurk everywhere! (I learn something new everyday!) I spent part of a Summer working in the sliced meat department of a grocery store. Hated that job and the people there. But even in that hell, I learned things about myself, organizational behavior...and meat. Surely, you learned things in this job.3. 4. Write a clear, kind resignation letter. (a) Kind?! Include those 3 things you learned. Be generous. I could find something genuinely kind to say about Cruella D'ville (great fashion sense?). Find something nice to say--without being fake. Frankly, the world would be a better place if we could all find something to appreciate in even the most hateful people and we noted it to them. (Yes. I believe mean bad people can be turned through kindness.) (b) Clear? Even if the job you are leaving is a manual labor position where you never touched a computer, handing in a formal resignation letter is a real ending. Make sure the letter is dated. Putting your resignation in writing protects you legally, gives you emotional closure, and can help you control spin/messaging.4. (a)友好! 5. Give at least 3 weeks notice. You can do almost anything for 3 weeks. Be the first one at work and the last one to leave each day. Slay something in those 3 weeks--make it a real win. Leaving on a high note is the best way to make them miss you. Want that mean boss to feel bad? Make him sorry he lost you.5. 6. Resist the desire to gloat. Posting something nasty on Facebook might make you feel good...for about 30 seconds, but that post will last a lifetime (and beyond). A job is like having a baby...you can get divorced but that baby daddy is connected to you forever. That boss and co-workers might be called as a reference or, if you remain in the same field, might become a vendor or competitor. Keep your words soft and sweet (and honest) because you might have to swallow them someday.6. 7. Cleanse. Long run? Large beer? Vacation? "Winning" is making yourself feel better, not making your tormentor feel worse.7. 8. Read my prior piece on 5 things to do after you leave a job. Yes, even when you hate a job or former boss, it’s important not to burn a bridge.8.
