1. long in the tooth

据说是“牙疼长，腿疼短”。因为牙齿在发炎的时候，会比平时长出一截。但是，英语中的"long in the tooth"跟牙疼可没关系，它的意思是“上了年纪”。

"Long in the tooth"这里的“牙”指的不是人的牙，而是马的牙。熟悉马的人都知道，马的牙齿是随着年龄的增长而变长的。年纪越大，牙就越长。所以，要想知道马老不老，看看牙齿就知道了。后来，这种说法也用来指人上了年纪。
